Web Sites about the Climate

One of the biggest drivers to the Transition movement is the global climate change that's already started happening as a result of human activity on Earth. Transition is concerned about what we can do to mitigate the coming changes (it's already too late to stop them), and also how we can live sustainably and resiliently in the changed climate.

This page is a place where we've collected links to some important web sites about the current climatalogical situation. The links here aren't about what's coming with regard to our climate, but what's going on right now.

Government Sites

U.S. Global Climate Change Research Program
This site has been created to integrate information by various federal agencies on current research into global climate change. In it are collected summaries of, and links to, the results of "all" the federal government's research efforts in this area. (One interesting note: the site treats Texas as part of the Great Plains, which extends northward to the Canadian border; a graphic of projected temperature increase in this region shows temperatures to rise in Texas a minimum of 5ºF this century.) One link of particular interest is "Climate Literacy Framework"; it takes you to PDF versions of the booklet "Climate Literacy: The Essential Principles of Climate Sciences".

Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States
This is a page with the 10 Key Findings of the U.S. Global Climate Change Research Program, above. If you read nothing else from that site, read this page. It summarizes the impacts of global climate change on the future of this country and the world.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
The IPCC won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for "their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change." This site contains descriptions of, and links to, that group's reports on the changing of the Earth's climate.

Other Sites

RealClimate - "Climate science from climate scientists"
This site has a large list of climatalogical resources, grouped into four categories:
   * For complete beginners
   * For those with some knowledge
   * For those who are informed, but need more detail
   * For those who are informed, but seeking serious discussion of common contrarian talking points
